Chaz and AJ Beer

Well, the boys have done it again (with a little help from Charter Oak Brewing).

Chaz and AJ are the hosts of WPLR and The FOX morning drive shows. Their sometimes unorthodox and often rude humor graces our airwaves to amuse us while we sit in the never ending traffic jams of the Connecticut highways and byways.

Last winter they released the Chaz and AJ Brown.  A portion of the sale of each bomber went to support the Chaz and AJ Toy Drive.  This time they came out with a nice summer beer - an orange shandy - I'm pretty sure the purpose of this brew was to get Pam drunk. From what I hear tell, they succeeded!

This limited edition brew is being sold only at Town Line Fine Wine on Hawley Lane in Stratford, CT.

Chaz and AJ Orange Shandy (5% ABV) pours an orangy amber color with a small bright white head that diminishes to a film of foam that lingers on top of the brew.

The aroma is of oranges. No surprise there.

Much like the radio show, Chaz and AJ Orange Shandy is light and fruity.  The orange flavor dominates this sweet beer. There are subtle beer characteristics but this brew is all about fresh juicy oranges. The finish is clean and crisp.

The moutheel is light and gently effervescent. 

Chaz and AJ Orange Shandy is extremely drinkable; fantastic to cool off with on a hot summer day.  

Overall: good.

I'm a superstar!

In December I wrote an article about Chaz & AJ Beer, a beer that was brewed by Charter Oak Brewing in conjunction with the morning radio show hosts to raise money for charity. Read about it here.

A couple weeks ago I received an email from the Chaz and AJ show's producer, Phil, saying that they all enjoyed my review and would like to have me come on the show to chat about beer.

Of course, I accepted. What fun!!

When I got to the studio I was greeted by Phil and who gave me the lowdown on studio procedures, like keeping your mouth close to the microphone without licking it (because that would be gross), then asked me to wait until Chaz and AJ were ready to have me on the air.

Being that this was my first personal appearance as Brauista I was understandably nervous. As I paced back in forth in the waiting area, I heard the door to the studios fling open. I spun around and through the doors flew a laughing Pam, the traffic girl, with Chaz chasing after her. Chaz glanced over at me so I said, "Hi." He said, "Who are you?" I said with enthusiasm, "I'm Brauista!" He said, "Oh, I forgot about that." then hurried on his way.

Uhm, okay.

Finally, it was time for me to go on the air. Phil got me all situated and introduced me to Chaz. I glanced over my shoulder into the attached studio and exchanged a friendly little wave to AJ. And then it was time. Deep breath, here we go!

The first thing Chaz asked after introducing me was why I started writing about beer. I explained that I enjoy drinking beer and wanted to share my experiences with other beer enthusiasts. From there we covered various beer related topics before he became fixated on my recipe for Beer Cheese Fondue Macaroni & Cheese. I have to admit that I was caught a little off guard with this line of questioning - I was expecting to talk about beer, not cooking. I can't blame them, of course. Nothing is better than homemade macaroni and cheese but when you add beer and bacon . . . wowzers! Anyhoo, I think I was able to get through the interview without sounding completely moronic.

After my brief interview I wrangled up the boys and Pam for a quick photo-op. Then I headed off to work in a bit of a daze.

I didn't get more than a few feet into the office when I heard someone shout, "You're a star!" And then, "Hey brewista." 

Oh boy.

I'm hoping to get the opportunity to go back to the show with a piping hot pan of my award winning macaroni and cheese. And maybe even get a chance to actually talk about beer!

Chaz and AJ kindly use their celebrity status to raise awareness of local causes and contribute to charities throughout the year.

Together with Charter Oak Brewing, they have created a beer that not only brings us cheer but gives to the disadvantaged. $3 from the sale of each bomber goes to the Chaz and AJ Toy Drive. A toy drive that's raised over $100,000 so far this year. That's a lot of goodies for a lot of kiddies.

Selecting appropriate glassware was a huge decision. I thought a Mason was the most fitting choice for a beer brewed for Chaz and AJ.

Chaz & AJ Beer (5.50% ABV) is a classic American brown ale.

It pours a clear brown with ruby highlights. It has a floofy head that leaves behind a nice cling of foam on the side of the glass.

The aroma is malty with metallic twang.

The taste brings forth a solid malt backbone.  There are hints of cocoa and smoke. This brew is gently sweet and mildly bitter together in good balance. The finish is clean, crisp and leaves behind a bit of roastiness.

The mouth feel is light with good carbonation.

Chaz & AJ Beer is a smooth, drinkable brew that anyone can enjoy. The sessionable alcohol content means you can raise more than one glass of cheer without getting stumbling drunk (like Chaz has been known to do) and knocking over the Christmas tree (something that AJ might do). And each bottle you buy helps buy presents for kiddies who wouldn't otherwise have them.
