I had the bestest beer last night! Lagunitas Sucks Brown Shugga Substitute Ale. When I saw the name up on the beer board listed simply as Lagunitas Sucks I was like, "Lagunitas does NOT suck? What the f*%*?!?"
So, I ordered it. After a taste, I can tell you for certain that this beer did not suck.
Now, I have had Brown Shugga and that's a rockin' good beer, too, so why the substitute?
Well, the story goes that it was first brewed in 2011 because due to whatever reason Lagunitas didn't have the capacity to brew Brown Shugga’ Ale so they brewed this up as a substitute in limited release. Per Lagunitas, "'We screwed up. We suck. Please accept our apology beer.'' They liked it so much that they had to brew it again. Boy, am I glad they did!
When I received the lovely golden colored Sucks Brown Shugga Substitute Ale ( 7.85% ABV) in an official Lagunitas mason jar style glass I was immediately struck by the amazing aroma. It was like broiled grapefruit with caramelized brown sugar on top . . . tart, sweet and mouthwatering.
The taste? Much like it smells. Lots of hoppy citrus goodness, a little spice and a sweet (but not overpowering) brown sugariness. This un-sucky beer is rich and warm. Really amazing. Truly delicious.
This is a fantastic holiday / winter ale. I highly recommend it and grab it while you can. It's out in limited release December 2012 / January 2013.

I just tried Bells Two Hearted a few weeks ago and thought, "Wow, this has to be my favorite IPA of all time!"
Then I tried this one. Damn. I immediately went out to the only place I could find it the next week and cleaned out their fridge of the last 3 six packs they had.
It's that good.
