Racer 5

Racer 5 is one of those "If you love IPA then you have to try this one" IPA's.  I don't generally go for trends. Especially, trendy beer. In fact, when I try a new beer, I prefer to no as little about it as possible and I never read other peoples reviews in advance.  I like to formulate my own opinion without any preconceived notions.

That being said, I do love India Pale Ales.

Ow! Ow!  Owie!

I'll try it! I'll try it!

No need to twist my arm.  Sheesh!

Racer 5 (7% ABV) brewed by Bear Republic pours clear pale gold with a thick white head.  It looks beautifully satiny in the glass.

The aroma was wonderful. Every time I took a sip I thought to myself, "Wow! This smells great!".  The smell is richly pine with a twist of citrus and an undercurrent of sweet malt.  Wonderful.

The taste is at first a blast of tart citrus.  This is backed up by a not too sweet caramel, so yeasty breadiness and a hint of pine.  A good balance of flavors that meld the bitterness of the hops with malty goodness. The finish is somewhat dry and bittersweet.

The mouthfeel is mediumish with a nice tingle of effervescence.

Racer 5 was not a disappointment.  There's nothing in-your-face or "big" about it.  It's tasty, refreshing and quite lovely. A rep well deserved!

Overall: very good!
